Google in talks with CRM software company Salesforce.com

LONDON - Google is likely to step into the CRM software arena, according to reports claiming it is in talks with Salesforce.com, which provides internet-based CRM software.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the alliance will probably lead to Google's web-based applications such as instant messaging and spreadsheets being integrated with Salesforce.com's web-based CRM software.

If a partnership does emerge, it will be a threat to Microsoft, which has a CRM offering as part of its range of desktop-based business software, although it is increasingly developing web-based extensions.

Salesforce.com chairman Marc Benioff declined to comment on any possible talks but said: "The enemy of the enemy is my friend. That makes Google my best friend."

Google also declined to comment, but reports say a formal announcement is coming in June.
