Google initiative to get girls coding uses New York Fashion Week as springboard

Google has used a programmable dress shown at New York Fashion Week to interest teenage girls in computer science.

The little black dress was created by fashion designer Zac Posen and revealed at his Spring 2016 show on Tuesday (8 September).

The programmable element of the dress is an LED lighting system developed by designer and coding mentor Maddy Maxey.

The show was attended by 50 teenage girls who have participated in the Made With Code programme founded by Google. The initiative aims to boost the proportion of girls among students of computer science above one per cent by showing how the things they love are made with code.

The girls had been involved in creating the animations shown on the dress.

The project’s audience has been extended with a web-based tool allowing people to create their own design for a virtual dress.
