The news of the redundancies was broken to staff on Friday. It is understood that about 12 people work full-time on the site.
The site was put up for sale in December last year, when the group announced it was refocusing on business-to-business activities, but no buyers have so far emerged. Earlier this month another music website, Dotmusic rival Music365, announced that is to close.
The redundancies are part of wider cost-cutting measures being implemented throughout United Business Media. CEO Lord Clive Hollick is expected to announce today that up to 400 jobs will be axed because of a drop in profits resulting from the advertising slowdown in the US.
The group, which publishes a number of high-tech titles under its CMP banner including Internet Week and Network Magazine in the US, will announce that half-year profits have slumped by more than 40% to £108m. About 30% of the group's revenues come from US high-tech advertisers.
Other parts of the business, however, are doing relatively well -- its PR Newswire business, for example, is expected to report an earnings increase of 7% and expansion plans.
Dotmusic.com's layoffs coincide with the news that Liam Hamilton, the chief executive of independent music website Worldpop, has resigned from the company.
The company's editorial directors Ben Turner and Ian Macleish and chief technical officer Gurtej Sandhu have also resigned.
Worldpop, which was set up by former BBC Radio One DJ Peter Powell and now sponsors the UK top 40 charts, has gradually moved its focus away from content provision towards email marketing and text messaging.
Hamilton joined Worldpop in May 2000 at the height of the dotcom boom.
