David and Goliath battle for Heineken as shortlist narrows to two

LONDON - McCann Erickson and independent shop StrawberryFrog are the final two agencies left in the 拢70m global Heineken pitch, after WCRS was knocked off the shortlist.

The contest now appears to be something of a David and Goliath battle. StrawberryFrog is a six-year-old agency with 70 staff based in offices in Amsterdam and New York, founded with the philosophy that the old agency model is broken.

On the other side is Interpublic Group-owned McCann Erickson, the largest advertising network in the world and with a history dating back to 1902.

However, StrawberryFrog has been punching above its weight in winning well-known global brands. It recently won a spot on the Coca-Cola roster in Germany, previously held by Publicis, as well as work for the Gap-owned clothing brand Old Navy in the US.

The agency also handles Heineken's Uefa sponsorship, which it won earlier this year and which helped earn it a place on the global pitch list.

Heineken previously retained Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam on the international brief, but decided to review the account in June in order to achieve more consistent advertising across the globe. It parted ways with W&K in the same month.

The pitch is being run by search consultants Agency Insight. It is expected to be completed by the end of August.
