Customer additions contribute to British Gas profits

British Gas added thousands of customers to its residential electricity offering and its services business in 2010, although its market share in gas dropped.

Electricity customers grew 4.9% from 6.33 million in 2009, to 6.45 million in 2010, but gas customers dropped by 0.5% to 9.33 million. The company's estimated market share in gas fell from 42.8% to 42.4%.

The number of customers taking services – which are mainly boiler-focused but include plumbing and electrical care – rose 3.1% to 8.72 million.

Households taking both supply and services rose by 6% to 2.16 million.

Operating profit for energy supply rose 24% to £742m, thanks in great part to higher prices, while operating profit for services rose 5% to £241m.

Centrica, British Gas's parent company, reported a surge in full-year pre-tax profits to £2.8bn, from £1.6bn in 2009.

The current British Gas advertising theme of "your home is your world" has been running since February 2009, and its sponsorship of British Swimming has been in place since March 2009.

The company did not say whether its marketing had contributed to its customer growth
