Betting and Big Brother boost Sky's interactive TV services

LONDON - British Sky Broadcasting has seen revenues generated by its interactive TV services increase by 100% to £186m, boosted by betting and the success of 'Big Brother 3'.

Surrey Sports, Sky's wholly owned bookmaker, now has 93,000 interactive TV betting registrations and takes an average of 60,000 bets per week. It generated revenue of £95m for the year.

The interactive service was also boosted by the huge popularity of 'Big Brother 3'. During the screening of the Channel 4 reality TV series, more than 5m votes to decide on which housemate should be evicted were cast using its service on Sky Digital.

Sky said its interactive services reached 4m users in the last quarter, boosted by new features such as classic Atari games and World Cup quizzes.

Average revenue per user for Sky's interactive services was £14 for the quarter, up by 29% on last year. The broadcaster revealed the figures today, when it published its full-year results for the year ending June 30 2002.

Sky's shares lept this morning, rising 5.24% to 623p in early trading, before rising 6.3% by 11am to 629p.
