The Open Air mobile site uses Google Gears software to identify the user's location to deliver a mash-up of local weather forecasts and event listings from the BBC Breathing Places website.

The plugin is currently only available on Android devices, Firefox and Internet Explorer, although support for the iPhone's safaris browser will be added in the near future.

BBC development producer Dominic Tinley said BBC Open Air was created to demonstrate how location-based search could be integrated with useful content.

"Building this demo allows us to test and demonstrate the technical feasibility of finding a location using the core capabilities of new mobile devices rather than having to develop bespoke applications that a user must install."

Earlier this year the BBC updated its mobile site to let users personalise the content shown on their homepage.
