BBC targets young web audience with EastEnders spin-off

LONDON - The BBC is taking a big step into online drama with a youth-oriented 'EastEnders' spin-off which will target the 'Hollyoaks' demographic and launch in January.

'EastEnders: E20' is a 13-part series about four new characters who move into Albert Square, but will include storylines and cameos by actors in the main programme.

Episodes will be posted on the website after 'EastEnders' TV episodes and will last between six and 12 minutes.

, the show's producer, Deborah Sathe, said the show would go after the 'Hollyoaks' demographic but would have a different feel from existing teen shows.

It will be written by 13 Londoners aged 17 to 22 who responded to a writing competition.

ITV's , though 'Street Talk' is not a drama but a magazine show hosted by a famous fan. It will feature story previews and interviews with cast members.

Channel 4 has used the spin-off format with its early evening teen soap 'Hollyoaks', creating post-watershed TV specials targeting an older audience with more daring storylines.

Most recent was 'Hollyoaks Later', shown at 9pm over a week on E4. Earlier this year it showed mini episodes of Hollyoaks online called 'The Morning After The Night Before'.

There is also 'Hollyoaks Music', sponsored by Matalan and featuring music from the set of 'Hollyoaks'.
