Apple sells customised iTunes gift cards via Facebook fan page

LONDON - Apple's iTunes has rolled out a new feature on its Facebook fan page that allows US users to create custom iTunes gift cards and send them directly to friends through the social networking site or via email.

To create an iTunes gift card, users simply pick from one of six different templates, which include designs for holidays and birthdays, as well as ones featuring the colourful iPod dancers.

They then choose how much cash they would like to put on the gift card, from $5 to $50, and enter the name of the recipient, using their email address or their Facebook link.

Additionally users can customise the card with a personal message and select when it should be sent, with the option of delivering it immediately or on a specific day.

The recipient receives their iTunes gift card as a post to their Facebook Wall and can instantly redeem it on the iTunes Store. Only recipients have the code to redeem the gift, others only see that a gift was given.

Apple worked with greeting card start up GroupCard and third party gift card provider Blackhawk Network to launch the application.
