Yahoo! opens search results to site owners and developers

LONDON - Yahoo! has become the first major engine to open its search page to site owners and developers giving them more choice over what results users see.

Yahoo! claims that its new tool, SearchMonkey, will shape the next generation of search for developers, website owners and users alike.

SearchMonkey's open source technology allows developers to build applications which enable differentiated and more relevant search listings, with control over listings content with options to incorporate images, ratings and reviews and embedded live links. Yahoo! claims that this will both increase quality of traffic and boost user loyalty and engagement.

Users will be able to opt-in to use SearchMonkey results, which Yahoo! claims will give them quicker access to the content they are looking for.

Jeffrey Revoy, vice president of search and social media for Yahoo! Europe, said that SearchMonkey is part of a broader strategy to: "enable the most relevant content and services so we become the starting point for the most consumers on the internet".

Over the last six months, Yahoo! has also launched Search Assist, a drop-down menu offering up contextually-relevant search results to users' search queries, and Search Scan - a partnership with internet security company McAfee.

"Yahoo! has always been investing in search," Revoy added, "the releases over the last six months are testament to our innovation."

Microsoft also recently made changes to its search offer, adding new functionality to Live Search and adCenter in a bid to attract advertisers.
