The internet company currently offers Yahoo! Broadcast, a free service where users can view a wide variety of on-demand audio and video content, from space shuttle launches to movies, sporting and music events, as well as advertisements and TV shows that have not been on the air in years.
It is now reported to be looking at offering movies on demand, soap-opera news and professional wrestling to users who are willing to pay for the privilege.
Yahoo! has polled customers recently with questions about the likelihood of their paying for this kind of content. According to C|Net, it is considering offering a package of sporting events for $6.95 (£4.88) a month, or a one-off fee of $2.95 for movies.
The company has been adding premium services to encourage users to pay for what was once free content. Areas targeted so far include astrology, personals and automotive classifieds.
Under the direction of chairman and CEO Terry Semel, Yahoo! has laid out its strategy for reducing reliance on advertising revenues, which currently account for some 80% of income.
