Xfm to launch awards for best debut British album

LONDON - Xfm is to launch an inaugural awards ceremony to honour the year's best debut album by a British artist, which will take place in London in January.

A shortlist for the Xfm Best British Debut Album of the Year for 2007, which will be decided by Xfm listeners, has yet to be announced, but could feature Jamie T, Kate Nash, The View, Klaxons and Pigeon Detectives.

The awards ceremony, which will take place at Koko in Camden on January 16, will feature a judging panel made up of Xfm presenters including Clint Boon, Jim Gellalty and Colin Francies, as well as figureheads from across the UK music industry, including Nicky Wire from Manic Street Preachers, Radiohead and Muse producer John Leckie, and NME editor Conor McNicholas.

The nominated acts will be invited to play at Koko during the awards ceremony, which will be chaired by Ande MacPherson, programming director at Xfm.

Nick Davidson, managing director of Xfm, said: "This award isn't for the industry but for our listeners and the bands to acknowledge the passion and hard work that goes into a debut album."
