Vodafone inks deal to secure Universal music content

LONDON - Vodafone has agreed a distribution deal with Universal Music Group to provide its Live! customers with music content.

The range of products includes track and video downloads, video streaming and ringtones from Universal's catalogue of acts including U2, Eminem, Kaiser Chiefs, Keane and 50 Cent.

Live! customers will have access to additional content from this week. They already had access to a limited number of tracks from Universal's catalogue. However, as a result of the deal, Vodafone said it expects that an additional 100,000 full tracks will become available over the coming weeks.

Lucian Grainge, Universal chairman and chief executive, said: "This agreement sets new standards in scale, reach and imagination within our respective industries. Both companies are committed as never before to provide new entertainment services for the benefit of customers, using 3G to harness the power and potential of new technology."

The news follows hot on the heels of a similar deal between Hutchison's 3 and Warner Music. Three million 3 subscribers will have access to music from artists including Madonna and James Blunt. The two companies are currently working on a project with band Hard-Fi to produce the world's first made-for-mobile music video.
