Twitter teams up with handheld firm to launch TwitterPeek

NEW YORK - Twitter has teamed up with budget handheld messaging firm Peek to launch the first Twitter mobile device.

Available from today exclusively on Amazon.com, TwitterPeek will allow for as little as $99, plus a monthly fee of $7.95 a month, people to tweet on the go without the need to buy a costly smartphone or data plan from their mobile phone company.

Peek makes a range of handheld cheap mobile messaging devices and a partnership with Twitter could take it to a whole new audience.

Available in grey or aqua colours, the TwitterPeek has 2.7 inch x 4 inch colour screen and a full Qwerty keyboard. The TwitterPeek does not require WiFi, but instead runs on high-speed wireless data networks.

In addition, TwitterPeek offers users unlimited tweets and direct messages and always-on instant tweet delivery. It will allow users to view links as plain text and Twitpic images.

Those feeling a little bit flush can opt for the $199 option that Peek is calling its lifetime service deal.

Amol Sarva CEO of Peek, said: "TwitterPeek will make it easy and affordable for everyone who doesn't have a smartphone to really enjoy Twitter on-the-go."

Sarva said that the device could help open Twitter up to a new market, particularly the teen market, which has not adopted the microblogging service in the way it has other social networking sites.

"Twitter die-hards will appreciate its 'always-on' instant tweet delivery and newbies will finally 'get Twitter' once they have TwitterPeek in hand.

"Even businesses that Twitter will dig TwitterPeek as a convenient way to stay connected with their customers."
