Twitter starts previewing improved mobile website

LONDON - Twitter has turned its attention to mobile and is previewing a new mobile website in recognition of the growing number of third party apps available.

In a post on its blog Leland Rechis (@leland) who leads the user experience on the @twittermobile team said the mobile team have built a brand new mobile web client from scratch using only Twitter APIs.

Although no launch date has been given it is expected to be rolled out soon.

Many Twitter users access the microblogging service via one of a number of third party mobile apps including the likes of Twitterberry, Fring, Jtwitter, Mobio, Abiro Jitter, Twitteresce, TreoTwit and Twibble.

However, Rechis said what was less well known was that lots of people access Twitter on their phones via its good mobile website. However, he acknowledged that the mobile.twitter.com site could do a bit more for users and match the features on offer from third party developers.

"Its got a great new look, and has some great new touches that will make your mobile experience on Twitter a bit more fun and a lot more helpful," Rechis wrote.

He added that the preview version of the new mobile Twitter site worked best on @Webkit browsers, which include Android, iPhone, Nokia S60 and Palm Web OS phones.

While the preview will run on the BlackBerry the team has not yet finished work on that platform.

"As this preview becomes ready for prime-time, we will start switching everyone who uses 'm' in phases to automatically receive the new mobile web client. This is just the start, we're excited about the new APIs launching at Twitter, and have been busy tinkering with some neat ways to use them," Rechis wrote.
