The Lufthansa branded , created by Profero New York, can ping status updates with periodic departure, arrival, and en route flight updates so that family, friends and colleagues can keep tabs on a passenger's location.
A passenger does not have to be travelling with Lufthansa to use the service - which is linked with an exhaustive list of most other world airlines, large and small, including British Airways, easyjet and Ryanair.
The flight's position and current status are given in the user's status updates, and a link offers users the ability to continue tracking the flight's progress.
The application joins a similar initiative rolled out earlier this year by the German website , which pings Twitter with a pre-set message when a user's flight arrives or departs, based on the scheduled departure and arrival times entered by the user.
Lufthansa has led from the front when it comes to digital marketing, having also launched the first mobile boarding pass service on a long-haul route in April between Frankfurt and Vancouver.
The move gives passengers travelling on the route the option to receive a mobile boarding pass with a 2-D barcode on their mobile phone.
