The Japanese marque, which was forced to recall over eight million cars across the globe earlier this year, saw new car registrations in April fall from 6,218 to 5,701 year on year. As revealed in Marketing,.

Ford and Vauxhall also had difficult months, down 22% and 11% year on year respectively, while Renault, Hyundai and Volkswagen-owned marque SEAT managed to more than double their sales in April 2009.

Italian manufacturer Fiat saw new car registrations rise by nearly 58% year on year, while BMW's sales were up by 39% and Audi grew its sales by 22% on the previous year.

With the £2,000 scrappage incentive scheme now over, SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt argued that the new government must continue to support the industry.

"As our new government establishes itself, the priority must be sustaining and strengthening the economic recovery with particular focus on encouraging the availability of more and better priced finance for businesses and consumers," he said.
