A ‘huge influx’ of spectators will head to central London to soak up the atmosphere at various Live Sites, NOCs and Games venues and watch the free-to-view cycling and athletics events next summer.
‘Closing traffic lanes to give more space to pedestrians, providing wider crossings and restricting volume of traffic in certain roads’, are just some of the plans specified in the strategy.
TfL also highlighted the need to suspend some parking and loading bays, restrict turns into roads and change bus lanes and stops to cope with the extra traffic.
As widely reported, there will be an Olympic Route Network (ORN) running through key areas of central London to provide a separate lane for athletes to get between their accommodation, training and competition venues.
No suggestions as to how TfL plan to tackle the extra strain on the tube network were mentioned however.
Local residents and businesses are being kept up to date with the changes with maps and information about the Central London Zone, which will be based around Hyde Park, Green Park and St. James Park.
"Central London's transformation into a major sporting venue does mean that some changes need to be made to roads and footways, and the maps and other information we've published today are the result of the work TfL and Westminster City Council have done to find the safest and most effective way to manage the area during the Games," said London's Transport Commissioner Peter Hendy.
Leader of Westminster Council, councillor Colin Barrow, said test events this summer will give them an insight into how Westminster will cope.
"Westminster is used to hosting major sporting events but the 2012 Games will present a unique set of challenges and will involve changes to the transport network. We are working closely with TfL and other agencies to ensure that the needs of residents and businesses are balanced with the important task of keeping London and the Games family moving," he explained.
