They watched as the IOC president and the Mayor of London formally invited athletes of the world to the Games next summer from a temporary stage in the square.

Princess Anne and Locog chairman Seb Coe also took to the stage to unveil the Olympic medals.

The event told the story of the journey of the Games coming to London, with interviews from Athletes, film footage, interspersed with BMX and Parkour performances and music from Gospel Choir and DJ Kissy Sell Out.

Entertainment firm Contraband International supplied several arabesque stilt walkers to weave in and out of the crowds.

Throughout the day further celebrations took place across the capital. Event agency Cake produced the activity at St Pancras International station, with Olympians being invited to make casts of their feet in clay, while more athletes could be seen testing out the pool at the Aquatics Centre – the last of the six main Olympic Park venues to finish construction.
