Tesco links with Fox to push online DVD sales with preview service

LONDON - Tesco is enabling customers to view film trailers on its website for the first time through a tie-up with Fox Home Entertainment.

The deal is part of a new push by Tesco to boost DVD sales online in the busy Christmas shopping period, by providing customers a "try before you buy" experience.

From now until Christmas, customers browsing DVDs on the entertainment section of Tesco.com will be able to view trailers for the latest Fox titles, including 'Mr and Mrs Smith', 'Star Wars: Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith', 'Fantastic Four' and 'Kingdom of Heaven'.

Tesco is able to show the movie clips using the latest Trailer Player technology from digital agency New Media Maze. Users do not need to download any technology and can just click to view the trailer.

Once the user has finished viewing a trailer, they can click to buy, or continue browsing the site. The deal coincides with the launch of a new version of Trailer Player, which enables users with high-bandwidth broadband services to view trailers full screen.

Colin Hulmes, Tesco.com video buying manager, said the trailers will "provide an enhanced online shopping experience to Tesco's 500,000 online customers".

The deal will initially run until Christmas but could be extended beyond that if the trailers prove to be a success with customers.
