Telegraph appoints head of mobile

LONDON - Telegraph Media Group has appointed Maani Safa as head of mobile

Safa has spent the last 12 months establishing Telegraph Labs and working on commercial projects to move the brand into new areas online.

He has played a key role in launching Telegraph mobile applications across TMG's digital platforms and in helping to spearhead innovation for the group.

He is joined by Mike Jennings, who will lead mobile engineering, working for Safa. Jennings previously worked for Google, initially as a senior software engineer and then as a developer advocate for the Android mobile platform. He also led the first European public demonstration of Google's Android operating system.

In December, TMG relaunched its Google Android application, with Cisco as its sponsor. The TMG Android application offers news, finance, sport, travel and motoring content from to customers who download the application wirelessly from the Android Marketplace.

TMG is one of a handful of UK content providers to have launched an application for Google's mobile phone operating platform. Earlier today it was reported that Google was planning to launch an apps store to rival Apple's.

The first phones to carry Google Android launched in the US in September. The platform hit the UK in November, when T-Mobile's G1 phone launched.

Paul Cheesbrough, chief information officer at TMG, said: "Mobile is an increasingly important platform for our readers and our advertisers, and the appointment of Maani and Mike into these key roles will help us build upon the successes we've already had in this space."
