The contract, which begins on January 7, realises a long-held aim of BSkyB-owner Rupert Murdoch to get Sky content aired on terrestrial TV. The deal will see Sky News's morning news programme Sunrise simultaneously broadcast on the UK's fifth terrestrial broadcaster.
The show will be broadcast between 6.30am and 7am each weekday and between 7am and 8am on Saturdays.
Sky News takes over from incumbent news supplier ITN, which recently beat a Murdoch-backed consortium to the ITV news contract, even though Murdoch severely undercut ITN's price.
Simon McCoy, Channel 5's current early morning news anchor, will continue to work on the show and from 2002 will jointly present the show with Julie Etchingham, who joins Sky News from BBC Breakfast News.
