Sky News readies paid-for iPhone app for non-UK users

LONDON - BSkyB is working on a paid-for version of its Sky News iPhone application for sale outside the UK and Ireland, where its free app has just been downloaded by its 500,000th user.

The in-house-developed application delivers breaking news by text as well as images, video and even features.

Users can choose what stories they receive from different categories, including sport, showbiz and UK news. It also lets users upload and send their own stories to Sky should they come across a newsworthy event.

A number of advertisers have already created campaigns to run within the application, including Lucozade, which ran its first pre-roll campaign on the Sky app video footage.

Since it launched, it has consistently been one of the top three applications in the download chart.

James Weeks, executive producer of new media for Sky News, said: "We knew it would be popular with regular Sky News viewers, but the stats for the first three months are really staggering and the feedback on the App store site has been very positive as well.

"It shows that we are delivering news in more ways than ever to people who want to consume it through many different platforms -- and new media is a huge part of that."
