Shammasian brothers win Cannes Young Director's award

CANNES - The Shammasian brothers, represented by production company Godman, have won the 2005 Young Director's Award at Cannes for their commercial 'Learn to Listen' created for Bang & Olufsen.

The Shammasian brothers developed and shot the black-and-white themselves, featuring a musician closely analysing the sound produced when pouring water into a glass. They then offered it to Bang & Olufsen who immediately decided to use it.

The duo were presented the award by the Commercial Film Producers of Europe and Shots at the Hotel Carlton in Cannes.

To qualify to enter the Young Director's Award, entrants have to have shot no more than four commercials. The award, which was introduced in 1999, covers three categories: test commercials; broadcasted commercials; and film school, to promote and encourage young directing talent.

The brothers began their career after graduating from university, when they started to write scripts and make their own shorts and documentaries.

They are currently working on their first commercial feature film along with their commercial and music video work.

Last year, Norwegian director Eric Hillenbrand won the award for the Sony PlayStation 2 ad "storm", along with Seb Edwards, for his ad for the PlayStation game 'Time Crisis 3'.
