The pledge is being backed by Glasgow 2014 and the SECC, which is hosting the media hub for the Games.

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games' organising committee is acting as ambassadors for the scheme by promoting it to the Games’ venues and suppliers, and to the Scottish events sector as a whole. The scheme is being delivered by Zero Waste Scotland on behalf of the Scottish government.

The SECC has pledged to improve recycling rates and energy efficiency and will also be focusing on staff engagement to ensure the whole team plays its part.

The pledge will also contribute to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games’ commitment to deliver a sustainable Games’ as the SECC campus will be the Games’ largest precinct venue, hosting judo, wrestling, gymnastics, boxing, netball, weightlifting and powerlifting, as well as being the main international media hub.

Alan Cuggy, safety, health and environmental manager for the SECC, said making the pledge is an important step for the business: "We are delighted to be the first venue to sign up to the Resource Efficiency Pledge as it will provide both the inspiration and motivation to enhance our environmental performance in what is a competitive and challenging business," he added.

David Grevemberg, chief executive of Glasgow 2014, added: "As an organising committee and in collaboration with the Games partners and stakeholders we are working hard to deliver a sustainable Commonwealth Games, embed resource efficiency in all aspects of Games delivery and we hope to share our learning with future Games host cities and the wider events sector."

According to Iain Gulland, director of Zero Waste Scotland, The Resource Efficiency Pledge is a way to make it easy for Scottish businesses to work through simple steps to reduce their use of resources, save money and demonstrate their commitment to the environment.
