Up to 3,000 voluntary cast members are needed for the ceremonies, which will be held at Celtic Park and Hampden, Scotland’s national stadium, and created by agency Jack Morton Worldwide.
The events are expected to be watched by live audiences of more than 40,000 people, and a potential global television audience of more than one billion.
David Zolkwer, director of Jack Morton Public Events and head of ceremonies and artistic director for the Games, said: "These are Glasgow's ceremonies so we’re putting the people who make this such a great city right at the centre of what we’re doing.
"That’s why our first public statement concerning the ceremonies is about opportunities – thousands of opportunities for the people of Glasgow and beyond to be a vital part of the Games they are hosting. It’s going to be a fantastic experience that our volunteer performers and the watching world will never forget."
Requirements for those looking to apply for a position include being aged 18 years old or older from 1 March, available to attend auditions in Glasgow and available to rehearse and attend the performance.
Content of the ceremonies is being kept under wraps, but organisers have said the two evenings will reflect the culture of Glasgow and Scotland.
Applications are being accepted until 14 February, with auditions due to take place in March.
David Grevemberg, chief executive of Glasgow 2014, said: "The opening and closing ceremonies will be a moment for Glasgow and Scotland to shine brightly on the global stage, demonstrating the genuine passion and enthusiasm the host city and country have for the Games.
"This is about showcasing the very best of a city and a nation to an international audience, and how better to do that than through the enthusiasm and passion of its people."
