The website was made unavailable at 6pm yesterday (13 May) to new customers looking to join the online queue or contact the call centre, while customers who were already mid-transaction were able to complete their session.
Glasgow 2014 representatives told Event they had "no idea" when the website would become available for ticket purchases.
Chris Edmonds, chairman of Ticketmaster UK, said: "We are aware customers have experienced long delays and some challenges during the ticket selection and purchase process. We do regret any frustration or disruption caused to any customers over the past two days.
"We are undertaking an urgent review to enhance the performance of the website and improve the customer experience and we are confident the ticketing site will re-open very soon. We would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding."
More than 50,000 tickets have already been sold since the website opened on the morning of 12 May. Organisers said would-be ticket holders that there would still be tickets available for "most sports and ceremonies" when the site re-opens.
David Grevemberg, chief executive of Glasgow 2014, said: "We will not allow the frustrations experienced by our customers throughout the last day and a half to continue further. We will only re-open the site once Ticketmaster is confident that the issues with the website have been resolved.
"We want the purchase of Commonwealth Games tickets through the Ticketmaster system to be a positive experience for all customers and we realise this has not been the case for many.
"We thank everyone for their patience and apologise unreservedly to everyone who has been affected and inconvenienced by this disappointing situation. We will provide an update on re-opening through our social and digital platforms and on our website."
