The initiative, developed in conjunction with digital agency AKQA, enables customers to sign up to receive a weekly 'bag reminder' SMS by texting the usual time and day of their visit to 63838.

Sainsbury's has also begun the process of removing free carrier bags from sight at check-outs in stores, although they will continue to be available upon request.

The hand-out of free carrier bags at Sainsbury's has been slashed by 28% since April this year, following a pledge to reduce their use by 50% by April 2009.

Sales of re-usable 'Bags for Life' have increased by 63% in the past year but the supermarket said 58% of shoppers do not re-use bags because they forget to take them along when shopping hence the need for a reminder.
