Ryanair said that the service, which is optional, would make travel more convenient for passengers because they won't have to print out their confirmation email to travel.
But bloggers are already trumpeting it as yet another way for Ryanair to make money from their passengers, along with charges to check-in baggage and plans to introduce toilet charges.
However, the airline has rejected plans for a "fat tax" after failing to work out a way of collecting it without disrupting the check-in process.
The airline's passengers had supported the move in a poll, with nearly half saying they were in favour of levying an excess payment for every kilogram that passengers weighed over 130kg for men and 100kg for women.
Ryanair's SMS confirmation service is being provided by 15below, a Brighton-based firm which specialises in travel software.
