Rotary event to generate £19.5m for local economy

The 100th Rotary International Convention ended yesterday (24 June) after a four-day stint at The NEC Birmingham.

The event, which took over the entire NEC site and nearby Birmingham city centre, is expected to provide the local economy with a £19.5m boost.

More than 150 countries exhibited to around 20,000 visitors in the largest ever House of Friendship, which had been given an old English theme complete with helter skelter and Old Vic pub.

On the evening of 23 June the city hosted a Birmingham Greets Rotary 2009 event with live music, late-night shopping and an International Food Fair in Victoria Square.
