No one will be replacing him as marketing director and his work responsibilities will remain unchanged. Bendel joined the supermarket two years ago from Publicis, where he worked as its chief operating officer, which at the time held the Asda ad account.
Today Asda reported that it had beaten its full-year sales and profit target with 6.5% growth in like-for-like sales, which it claims was driven by its long-term commitment to everyday low prices.
Last month it ran a TV ad campaign in response to what it says is growing cynicism among shoppers that question how it manages to sell its products at such low prices.
The ad, created by Fallon, showed ASDA staff turning off light bulbs and recycling, which it claimed saves them millions of pounds a year and makes it the supermarket with the lowest operating costs. The ad featured a new strapline: ‘Saving your money every day'.
