LONDON - QBE, the business insurer, has become the official insurance partner of the Rugby Football Union, as the company looks to establish its brand in the UK.

The company will sponsor the RFU for the next four years in a deal negotiated by Generate Sponsorship.

The partnership is the RFU's first official insurance sponsorship, although in the past the rugby body has had relationships with insurance brands including Investec.

The agreement builds on QBE's existing rugby sponsorship, following the launch of its partnership with the Guinness Premiership in October 2009.

To mark the announcement, a 50-metre image of England players Steve Borthwick, Jonny Wilkinson and Lewis Moody, was displayed on the Lloyd's Building in London this morning (3 February). The projection will also be on display this evening.

Steven Burns, chief executive of QBE's European operations, called the partnership a "further demonstration of QBE's commitment to the development of English rugby".

He added: "Despite QBE being one of the UK's largest insurers of business risk, we are not a recognisable brand. Our relationship with the RFU will provide us with an excellent opportunity to raise our profile and with development opportunities to present QBE as the insurer who understands the specialist needs of businesses."
