Premier Rugby and O2 launch youth academy

LONDON - Premier Rugby has teamed up with mobile giant and England rugby sponsor O2 to launch the Premiership Rugby Academy to train and discover the rugby stars of the future.

The Academy will offer a range of courses run by top Premiership coaches and players, including former England captain Jason Robinson, for boys and girls aged six to 17 years old.

Every young person taking part will get the opportunity to enter the O2 Kick, Run and Pass Challenge, the UK's biggest rugby skills competition.

The winner from each of the three groups -- nine years and younger, 10 to 13 years and 14 to 18 years -- will go forward to the regional finals to win the chance to play at the Premiership final and be crowned the O2 Kick Run and Pass Challenge winner.

Carlotta Calleri-Zavanelli, head of sports sponsorship for O2 UK, said: "O2 is proud to be building on its successful association with Premier Rugby with the launch of the Premiership Rugby Academy, enhancing O2's involvement in rugby at all levels.

"Whatever we do in our sponsorship, it is critical we deliver some additional value back to our fans and in turn our customers as part of our strategy of ensuring that they remain at the heart of our business."

Three-day and five-day Premiership Rugby Academy courses will be available in school holidays from Christmas 2005 until October half term 2006.

Top clubs including Jonny Wilkinson's Premiership team Newcastle Falcons will accommodate the courses.

In addition, Gilbert, Land Rover and The Times have been confirmed as official suppliers to the Academy.
