Event supplier Piggotts is providing the lights for the 57th successive year. It was contracted by New West End Company to install the star-themed lights over ten days.
The 600,000 LEB bulbs use 75% less energy than conventional bulbs.
Piggotts Managing Director Lee Harvey told Event: "This year, we replaced ten large 3D presents [from last year's lights] with spectacular giant stars that will change the look and feel of the scheme in Oxford Street."
"Lighting schemes change each year with design trends moving from traditional to contemporary, and back to the traditional." he added. "One functional element which has changed most significantly over the years is energy consumption. The bulbs in the Oxford Street lighting scheme now consume an equivalent amount of power over four years than they would have done using traditional incandescent bulbs over one year."
Oxford Street’s ceremony is the first in London, and comes earlier than last year’s switch-on, which took place on 4 November.
The lights will hang over the shopping street until 5 January 2012.
