The Oscar-winning director, along with his wife and 'Lord of the Rings' co-screenwriter Fran Walsh, will set up an interactive arm of his firm, Wingnut, to work with 'Halo' creators, Microsoft and Bungie Studios, to develop the series.
The series, yet to be named, will be crafted for the Xbox 360 games console and Xbox Live, the machine's internet portal that allows multiple players to take part from other locations.
'Halo' was created for "hardcore gamers" and became a big hit, but Jackson has said that the new addition will be built for the mass market.
In addition, Jackson and Walsh have been named as the executive producers for the upcoming 'Halo' movie, which is based on the game franchise.
Jackson and Walsh will provide creative advice on all aspects of the film and contribute creatures and visual effects.
The film is currently due for global release in summer 2007. Universal will handle the US distribution of the film and Fox will handle the international release.
Microsoft said that the game and the film are not related, like the game Jackson helped create based on his 2005 film 'King Kong'.
Jackson said: "As a gaming fan, I'm excited to bring 'Halo''s premise, action and settings to the screen with all the specificity and reality today's technology can provide. I'm a huge fan of the game and look forward to helping it come alive on the cinema screen."
Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman, said: "Peter Jackson is one of Hollywood's most exciting innovators and our partnership with him will greatly broaden the appeal of the 'Halo' franchise. We're confident he'll create an epic that not only thrills existing 'Halo' fans, but also introduces millions of moviegoers around the world to this amazing saga."
