Nuts forced to drop 'best-selling men's magazine' label

LONDON - Lads' weeklies Zoo and Nuts have been scrapping in public again, after the former objected to a Nuts email that claimed it was 'the best-selling mens magazine in Europe'.

The email, sent out by IPC Media-owned Nuts, read: "Wahey! Nuts smashes the 300,000 barrier! Yep, as of this week, Nuts Magazine, already the best-selling men's magazine in Europe, is officially even bigger than ever, with sales figures showing that we have smashed through the 300,000-a-week mark and keep on growing."

Emap, which publishes Zoo, FHM and Arena, complained to the Advertising Standards Authority that the "best-selling" claim could not be substantiated.

The advertising watchdog upheld the complaint and told IPC not to repeat the claim.

IPC said its claim was based on the total number of copies of Nuts sold a month. It said on average it sold 301,671 copies of each weekly issue of Nuts in the UK and Ireland, and 3,080 copies around the world.

The ASA decided Nuts' claim was misleading because on average FHM, the Emap men's monthly magazine, sold on average 560,167 copies, more copies for each issue than Nuts.
