The league, which stages an annual American football match at Wembley Stadium, is discussing pairing with football or rugby clubs outside London to hold youth sports events in the week leading up to the game.
It could also take NFL players to events and hold parties at universities to celebrate the US Super Bowl game, the pinacle of the American football season.
The NFL has signed a deal to hold an annual game at Wembley until 2016. It holds events in London to build support for the games, such as last year's
Mark Killingley, marking director of the NFL, said: "We're looking to take our activity nationwide in the long term. From a commercial perspective it makes sense for us to take things outside of London - it's the right thing to do."
He added: "We've made a commitment to playing games at a stadium in London, but our audience is spread nationally. The people who buy tickets to our games at Wembley aren't particularly from London and the south east. Speaking cynically, we know that the further away from London we go, the more cut through we can get for less investment.
"American football has now been accredited as a sport at British universities, so that gives us platform to activate around the country."
Taking NFL players to events out of London would be a key asset, Killingley said. "Our best assets are the real thing from the US – the cheerleaders and players. There's no substitute for a little kid looking up at a 6ft 8in giant, so the more we can bring players out of London, the better."
Killingley was speaking at a talk at HS&E House, the London offices of Havas Sports and Entertainment which are holding events and talks during the Olympics.
