McDevitt, who joined IPC in May as director of group advertising, will chair the IPC advertising executive and lead the formulation and implementation of the company's advertising strategy.
As a board member one of her jobs will be to improve how IPC works with agency planners and buyers by developing a more efficient trading structure. In addition, she will work with the PPA to increase the appeal of magazine advertising.
Sylvia Auton, IPC Media chief executive, said: "Caroline's appointment is a strategic response to changing agency and client needs. Consolidation, commoditisation and customisation are fundamentally impacting on how media is bought, and we need to adapt the way we work to reflect these dynamics. In the short time she has been with us, Caroline has already made a significant impact and I know she will be a great asset to the board."
McDevitt was chief executive of Barb from 1998 to 2004 and before that spent six years as a main board director of Westcountry Television.
Meanwhile, IPC also announced two significant advertising appointments. IPC Connect ad director Kate MacKenzie has been appointed to the new role of group ad director, weeklies, where she will oversee ad strategy for IPC Connect's portfolio of women's weeklies and IPC tx's market-leading portfolio of TV listings titles.
At IPC ignite!, display sales director Sam Finlay has been promoted to the role of group advertisement director across IPC's men's and music magazines.
