McCann-Erickson behind ad hoax campaign

LONDON - A media campaign to save the UK's takeaways has been revealed to be a stunt in aid of a pasta snack range.

McCann-Erickson was behind the hoax, which featured former World's Strongest Man competition winner Geoff Capes as the spokesman for the fictitious "Save our takeaways" campaign.

The ads are actually in support of Nestle's Snack Stop brand, which relaunches this weekend with a £4m TV campaign.

The idea behind the ads is that Snack Stop is threatening the UK's takeaways. Two executions feature Capes, one where he says that the noodles could spell the end of the traditional chippy and the second describing Snack Stop as a threat to pizza delivery services.

Media such as The Sun, Loaded and Radio 4's Today programme were taken in by the ads and interviewed Capes about the campaign.

Members of the public have also been logging on to the saveourtakeaways.com website to offer support for Capes' fictitious bid to save the nation's takeaways.
