Coverage of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics is believed to have been a key driver for newspaper sites throughout August.
A Guardian News & Media spokesperson said: "It’s fantastic that we recorded the highest ever number of monthly page impressions last month.
"Reaching this milestone is testament to our brilliant coverage of the London 2012 Games during August, with Olympic content alone being viewed by more than 11 million unique browsers across the month."
The August figures show that The Telegraph had 53.9 million global unique browsers last month, and over the two-week period of the Olympics, visits to Telegraph Sport increased by 270% from the same period a year earlier.
Tony Gallagher, editor, The Daily Telegraph, said: "These record audience figures – both global and UK - highlight the Telegraph’s Olympic success. The August ABC figures also showed that The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph were both up month-on-month thanks to agenda-leading editorial, standalone 'London 2012' supplements during The Games and a hugely successful street selling campaign which continued into the Paralympics."
Meanwhile, The Independent is celebrating "outstanding results" for its recent investment in revamping its website, after monthly web traffic has risen 20.47% globally month on month to a 19.3m in August, up from 16m in July.
In the same stable, the website for the London Evening standard, Standard.co.uk, monthly traffic increased 0.42% to a high of 3.8m in August.
Zach Leonard, managing director for digital at The Independent, said: "Both August’s ABCe figures and the recent NRS results reflect our sustained digital growth and the outstanding results of our investment in The Independent and London Evening Standard brands."
