Mail Online set a new record for a UK newspaper brand for a second month running, reaching 85 million unique browsers, while Guardian.co.uk reached its own high of 63.6 million.

Mail Online’s figure equates to an 8% month on month rise, and was labelled "remarkable" by rival Guardian. The UK’s most popular newspaper site has grown 65% since November 2010, and daily users were up 11.6% to 5 million.

The Guardian broke its own web traffic record in November for the second month in a row, with daily average unique browsers of nearly 3.7 million. It represents year on year growth of 59.1% and a lift of 12.9% from October.

Georgina Henry, head of guardian.co.uk, highlighted the Guardian’s "digital-first" strategy, launched earlier this summer, while celebrating the "fantastic" growth.

Henry added: "This success has been fuelled by both our agenda-setting journalism, and our digital expansion, with Guardian content being available on more platforms - and to more readers - than ever before."

Last month, The Guardian revealed that its app for Facebook’s Open Graph had reached more than four million users within its first two months ago and been generating almost a million extra page impressions per day.

Elsewhere, News International’s tabloid The Sun, which only returned to official ABC reporting in September after the entire group portfolio withdrew in April 2010, reported 24.2 million global monthly unique browsers, and 1.5 million daily browsers.

The Telegraph continues to have the third most popular newspaper website in the UK, with a 2.4% monthly rise to 2.3 million unique browsers.

The Independent’s website, which was relaunched in November and has also launched an app with Facebook, reported a 12.2% uplift in daily average unique browsers to 686,062, a year-on-year increase of 22.5%. However, monthly users at Independent.co.uk dropped 2% to 13.6 million.
