Federated Department Stores, owner of Macy's, saw ideas from 40 agencies across the US before appointing Lowe.
Terry Lundgren, president and chief executive officer of Federated, said: "The search for an agency was an exciting process that reinforced for all of us the power of one of our most important and yet underutilised assets -- the Macy's brand."
"The quality of the agencies we interviewed made this a difficult decision, but ultimately Lowe was awarded the Macy's project because it is a creative innovator who understands the needs and potential of our brand and has the strategic thinking, which will work well in the Macy's department store culture," Lundgren said.
The account covers Macy's East, Macy's West and the newly named Rich's-Macy's stores, based in Atlanta, and will be handled by Lowe New York. Macy's is famous for its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade and 4th of July Fireworks, held in New York City. Paul Hammserley, chief executive officer of Lowe, said: "We are setting the creative bar very high to match the stature of our new client."
Macy's divisions will continue to market their day-to-day businesses.
Federated owns 450 stores in 24 states of the US, including Bloomingdale's, Burdines and The Bon Marche, with annual sales of more than $15bn (拢9.3bn).
