will offer up-to-date videos, along with archive content, covering the news, music, movies, travel and sports arenas.
The new platform will be powered by online video specialist Roo, which will also provide Lycos with tools to stream video content through the portal.
The Lycos TV portal will feature the complete library of Roo's extensive video content, which will be updated regularly. Original Lycos video content and user-generated content will be added in the coming months.
It will also feature advertising pre-roll spots and more new ad formats will be developed as the channel develops.
Jeffrey Lee, managing director of Lycos UK, said the channel's launch was in line was the increasing user demand for online video content.
"Our users demand an enriched web experience and moving to a comprehensive online video content service was the obvious place to start.
"Roo's technology meant that we could get a video portal up and running with a huge amount of video content available to users from the word go. However, it also provides us with a platform that we can use to add content from other partners, our own Lycos UK-generated content and content generated by our community of users."
Robert Petty, CEO of Roo, said the Lycos partnership was the latest in a string of deals with companies including FT.com and The Sun. "We expect the Lycos deal to give us real momentum in Europe," he said.
