ITV2 orders Footballers' Wives spin-off in drama first

LONDON - ITV2 has commissioned its first drama series 'Footballers' Wives: Extra Time' from the original series producer Shed, which will feature the late-night sex-filled antics of the players and their other halves.

ITV2 has said established 'Footballers' Wives' names will be involved in the series, although the network could not confirm who.

The spin-off series will likely offer viewers controversial scenes such as those cut from the third series of 'Footballers' Wives', when ITV was forced to drop risque gay sex after network bosses claimed that the scenes were too explicit for broadcast even after the watershed.

There will also be new cast members and celebrity cameo appearances like glamour model Jordan, who appeared in the third series of 'Footballers' Wives' as herself.

'Extra Time' will go into production in March with 12 half-hour epiodes due to air later this year, directly off the back of the fourth series of 'Footballers' Wives', which is due to air on ITV1 in the spring.

Maureen Chadwick and Ann McManus, the creative force behind 'Footballers' Wives', have created the series and will lead the writing team.

Daniela Neumann, controller commissioned programmes at ITV2, said: "I am very excited about this series. It is the biggest thing we have ever done on ITV2. What better way to have drama on the channel than to extend a series the audience already loves and understands."

Eileen Gallagher, managing director of Shed Productions, added: "The 'Footballers' Wives' brand has terrific appeal and we know 'Extra Time' will exactly fit the ITV2 audience profile."

The news follows ITV2 beating its multichannel rival Sky One to become the sixth most-watched channel in the UK, boosted by the launch of 'American Idol' last weekend.

Over two weekends and a week, ITV2 managed an average 2.4% share, beating Sky One with 2.1% of the audience in multichannel homes.
