ITV1 beats BBC One by 2.2m viewers with Whitechapel climax

LONDON - Murder drama 'Whitechapel' bowed out with 7.6m viewers on ITV1 last night, comfortably beating BBC One's 'Who Do You Think You Are?', according to unofficial overnight figures.

The third part of 'Whitechapel' was seen by 30% of the audience while TV chef Rick Stein's appearance on the BBC genealogy show was watched by 5.4m and 22% of the audience, slightly less than Fiona Bruce's outing last week.

'Who Do You Think You Are?', which still has two installments to go, will next Monday go up against the debut outing for ITV1 and NBC's co-production 'Law and Order UK', which moves the US network's long-running franchise to London.

The appeal of the two main channels crowded out BBC Two's new detective series 'Moses Jones' in the 9-10pm slot last night.

It is now down to 1m viewers, 4% of the audience, after managing 1.2m last week and 1.4m on its debut two weeks ago.

Likewise Channel 4 lost viewers for its documentary strand exploring the relationship between criminals and the establishment.

'The Gangster and the Pervert Peer' gathered 1.5m viewers (a 6% share); last week's outing, 'The Princess and the Gangster', managed 1.8m.

Five's Monday movie 'Windtalkers', notched up 1.2m viewers giving the channel a 6% share between 9pm and 11.30pm.
