ITV1 beats Attenborough as 6.8m watch England lose

LONDON - David Attenborough's new series 'Nature's Great Events' started on BBC One last night with 3.7m viewers but was beaten by ITV1's international football coverage which drew 6.8m viewers, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The first part of Attenborough's six-part series looking at seasonal spectacles in nature featured Arctic wildlife including narwhals, guillemots, arctic foxes and polar bears. It attracted a 14.4% share of the 9pm-10pm audience.

ITV1's football coverage of Spain's 2-0 win against England dominated the prime time slot with 6.8m viewers and a 30.4% share of the 8.30pm-11.15pm audience.

The match saw David Beckham win his 108th cap to equal Bobby Moore's record but also manage to get himself booked for confronting the referee.

Channel 4's property series 'Grand Designs' matched 'Nature's Great Events' by pulling in 3.7m viewers and a 14.3% share of the 9pm to 10pm audience. Including Channel 4+1 figures it reached 4m viewers.

The second part of Five's remake of 'Minder', starring Shane Richie and Rik Mayall, netted 1.8m viewers and a 7% share in the same slot. This is down 600,000 viewers on its debut last week.

It beat the final part of BBC Two's 'Terry Pratchett - Living with Alzheimer's' documentary, which drew 1.7m viewers and a 6.7% share.
