ITV joins bidders for FA Cup rights

ITV is bidding against the BBC and Sky and possibly Irish broadcaster Setanta, for the rights to show FA Cup matches and England's home games from next season.

The Football Association's deadline for bids for the next four-year broadcast contract ran out on Friday, with the BBC currently showing the lion's share of games thanks to a previous £300m joint bid with Sky.

ITV boss Michael Grade is understood to see sport as a major plank in the channel's future strategy, whereas Setanta has ambitious plans for expansion and is about to break Sky's monopoly on Premiership matches in August.
