BSkyB wins first three Premiership packages

BSkyB has won three of the six packages of live Premiership football rights, the FA Premier League announced today.

The remaining three will go to a second round of bids and the Premier League is inviting fresh offers.
It did not comment on which matches BSkyB had won in the first round of offers, as bids are at this stage bound by confidentially.
Each of the six packages contains 23 matches per season from 2007-08 and BSkyB is entitled to bid for two more packages.
The broadcaster was understood to be up against NTL and Channel 4, which is thought to have put in a surprise bid, in yesterday's auction. Five and Irish broadcaster Setanta have also expressed interest.
The competitive pitch for the rights is expected to push the total price to more than £2bn.
