Sky may pay £1bn for Premiership rights

BSkyB owner Rupert Murdoch could be squaring up to pay an estimated £1 billion to retain its exclusive TV rights to broadcast Premier League Football matches.

Press speculation over the weekend suggested that Murdoch is prepared to fork out as much money for the rights as he paid for the existing contract, despite a decline in the value of TV sports rights over the last 18 months.

The news also conflicts with suggestions that the Premier League is considering launching its own television channel and distributing the matches that way.

Sky was expected to pay less this time around than it has in the past for rights to the Premier League. The demise of ITV Digital, which threw the Football League clubs into financial crisis, and the troubles plaguing the cable broadcasters NTL and Telewest has created less competition for the rights.
