Ipsos launched a nationwide market research project to determine what the UK really thinks about reality TV, with results indicating that less than half of viewers are prepared to admit they watch reality TV shows, and that people would much prefer to watch celebrities over ordinary people.
Three-quarters of the survey believe that ordinary people act differently because they are on television, while the same number think that reality television helps them to get to know a celebrity better.
Almost nine out of 10 reality TV viewers agree that participation has a significant impact on a celebrity's career -- a fact that is certainly backed up by stars who have appeared on ITV's 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!', such as Jordan and Linda Barker.
Yet the majority of viewers agree that they have not only grown respect for certain celebrities but have also gone off others they have got to know better.
Research also revealed that half the viewers admit to voting for shows with over 58% using telephones, 28% text messages and 14% by interactive using the red button. Eight per cent of respondents would also like to feature in a reality TV programme.
Ipsos UK used its Quest panel of 4,000 individuals that answer questions specifically on media related issues each week for the research.
